Prior to becoming Master Craftsman, candidates must endure a 5 year apprenticeship program. At the end of the program, the final test was creating a perfectly crafted “Waterford Crystal Apprentice Bowl”.
While you can still tour the factory in Waterford, only very custom crystal is currently being manufactured here. After a series of mergers and acquisitions, Waterford Crystal is currently owned by the Fiskars Corporation. They currently own brands such as Waterford, Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Royal Albert and Rogaška. Most consumer grade Waterford Crystal you will find in stores are manufactured in countries such as Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Germany.
Even so, the factory tour in Ireland still makes a pleasant stop and it is very interesting to see these Master Craftsman at work. We highly recommend stopping if you are in the Waterford Ireland area during your Irish vacation.
